April signals the tenth installment of our Leaders in the Civic Engagement Movement series. This issue features Dr. Lisa Anderson, American University in Cairo President and member of the Talloires Network’s Steering Committee. 
At the request of the Ministry of Higher Education of Saudi Arabia, the Talloires Network contributed to planning and conducting the 4th International Exhibition and Conference on Higher Education, “The Social Responsibility of Universities,” held April 16-17, in Riyadh. 
On behalf of the MacJannet Foundation and the 2013 Selection Committee, the Talloires Network Secretariat is pleased to announce the winners of the 2013 MacJannet Prize for Global Citizenship! 
The Editors of the Australasian Journal of University-Community Engagement invite and encourage academic and professional staff involved in engagement activities to submit a paper for consideration in the Autumn 2013 edition of the e-journal. Papers must be received by May 31, 2013. 
The European Wergeland Centre (EWC) has entered into a partnership with the Moscow School of Political Studies (MSPS) regarding a 3 year program on civic education in Russian regions. The program aims to strengthen the professional practice of educators as well as to draw the attention of the political and intellectual elite to the importance of promoting civic education at institutions for secondary education and universities. The program is funded by the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. 
CCPH’s 13th conference, “From Rhetoric to Reality: Achieving Authentic, Equitable & Transformative Partnerships” takes place April 30-May 3, 2014 in Chicago. The conference will draw hundreds of community members, faculty, staff, students, funders and policy makers from around the world and convene for four days of skill-building, networking and agenda-setting! Session and poster proposals are due September 30. 
Globalisation, Higher Education, the Labour Market and Inequality addresses the global transformation of higher education in relation to changes in the labour market. It focuses on the relative impact of elements of globalisation on social inequality, and provides insights into the ways in which these general forces of change are transformed into specific policies shaped by global forces and the various national values, institutional structures and politics of the specified societies. 
Advocates of engaged learning in higher education through programs such as internships, cooperative education, and service-learning make strong claims for its value to students, colleges, and communities. But many mainstream academics either ignore or reject those claims, favoring more conventional forms of curriculum and teaching. Drawing on ethnographies of scores of student-interns and many years of professional practice, Moore tackles the controversy over whether first-hand experience is a legitimate and effective source of learning. He identifies both the pitfalls and the possibilities in engaged pedagogies and suggests conditions under which they might work best.
Although media coverage often portrays young people in urban areas as politically apathetic or disruptive, this book provides an antidote to such views through narratives of dedicated youth civic engagement and leadership in Chicago, Mexico City, and Rio de Janeiro. This innovative comparative study provides nuanced accounts of the personal experiences of young people who care deeply about their communities and are actively engaged in a variety of public issues. Drawing from extensive interviews and personal narratives from the young activists themselves, Citizens in the Present presents a vibrant portrait of a new, politically involved generation. 
Authenticity in and through Teaching introduces three distinct perspectives on authenticity, the existential, the critical and the communitarian, and shows what moving towards greater authenticity involves for teachers and students when viewed from each of these angles. In developing the notion of ‘the scholarship of teaching as an authentic practice', this book draws on several complementary ideas from social philosophy to explore the nature of this practice and the conditions under which it might qualify as 'authentic'. Other concepts guiding the analysis include ‘virtue’, 'being', ‘communicative action’, 'power', ‘critical reflection’ and ‘transformation’. 
The 13th Association of African Universities General Conference will address the following sub-themes: The Connect Between Higher Education and Productive Sector; Graduate Employability; The Role of Organised Private Sector; Socio-Political Environment and Employability; and Funding Issues. 
The Canadian Society for the Study of Higher Education (CSSHE) is sponsoring a series of sessions on community engagement and community-engaged scholarship at its June 3-4 meeting in Victoria as part of the Congress of the Humanities and the Social Sciences. 
Lingnan University announces the 4th annual Asia-Pacific Regional Conference on Service-Learning. Keynote speakers will be: Prof. Andrew Furco (University of Minnesota), Dr. Mabel Erasmus (University of the Free State); and Mr. Chung Po Yang (The Hong Kong Institute of Service Leadership & Management and The Good Life Initiative Limited). 
CU Expo 2013: Engaging Shared Worlds, is being held in Corner Brook, Newfoundland & Labrador, hosted by Grenfell Campus, Memorial University of Newfoundland and the City of Corner Brook, with support from the provincial Rural Secretariat. Over the 3 days of the conference, participants can choose from a variety of interactive sessions: from workshops to arts activities, deliberative dialogue to presentations, participatory communications, mobile tours, service learning and more. 
This first PASCAL Conference to be held in Asia draws on the PASCAL International Exchanges Project, PIE to examine the direction, capacity and governance of cities. It is planned in partnership with the host Hong Kong Institute of Education and RMIT’s European Union Centre, with regional bodies such as ACUPEN, ASPBAE and EAFEA. Other partners include the Hong Kong UNEVOC Centre. The Conference will focus on present and future action, mainly within neighbourhood communities and in cities.
